We are old enough to have actual vinyl records. However, we didn't have anything to play them on, the turntable having long ago given up the ghost. So, I started a three month long campaign to convert or replace all the tapes and records.
Note: I was able to download much of the music from peer-to-peer networks, which was fair use considering I had already paid for the albums and had the right to convert them into any format I choose. I recommend this method, but you need to act quickly before somebody sues the networks out of existence.
Anyway, I wound up with half my music collection in MP3 format, and the rest on CD which was easily converted to MP3. We hooked up a PC where the CD player used to be, and presto! All of our music was in one format for the first time ever.
We use MusicMatch Jukebox, which is a great little program, except for one annoying flaw. If you have an album with continuous music from track to track (such as "Dark Side of the Moon"), Jukebox pauses briefly between tracks. Very annoying!
Still, it has some great features. I went through and "tagged" every G-rated song in my collection as "Kid Mix." That includes Bible songs, nursery rhymes, poems, classical music, pop hits, jazz, folk music, churchy hymns, and some fairly exotic multi-cultural stuff like medieval bagpipes, Vietnamese mountain singers, and Hindi show tunes.
Now, my kids know how to use the "Auto DJ" feature on Jukebox to punch up hours worth of randomly selected Kid Mix. They really enjoy it! And, I can rest assured that they are not getting into a musical rut, or listening to inappropriate lyrics. What's more, I never have to listen to 101 nursery rhymes in a row any more!
Here is a sample list of Kid Mix tunes, enough to last three hours.
