Early in our home schooling adventure, we had to notify the state of our intention to homeschool. The Department of Non-Public Education had this advice on their Web site: "Select a name with an academic sound to it -- one that would be appropriate for possible ultimate placement on your student's high school diploma. Avoid including your (or your student's) name in it."
Others had told us of the discounts and other goodies that are often available to schools, but not as often open to home educators. Picking an official-sounding name, they advised, made it easier to avoid such discrimination.
